My Passion for Medicine

By Anna Sibilia

Project Description

My passion for medicine began at a young age. I don’t know what stirred this passion in me, but through the years it has increased. During middle school I did community service hours in a hospital as a receptionist. Watching so many people walk through the hospital door looking to be admitted or coming to visit a loved one left a lasting impression on me. My time there was something I really enjoyed and didn’t really know how this was going to impact my life.

During high school my world changed when my grandmother was diagnosed with acute leukemia. I was devastated when I heard the news. I felt helpless and hopeless. There’s nothing worse than feeling defeated when someone you love is suffering and you’re powerless to save them. Each hospital visit reminded me of the many people I saw as a receptionist coming to the hospital needing/wanting to get better. I absorbed every word the doctor shared with us because I wanted to make sure my grandmother “Ita” would get better. Little did I know that an anatomy class I took in high school would allow me to help my grandmother? After months of documenting her health for the nurse who would come to our house 3 times a week, taking her blood pressure and comforting her, I learned a valuable lesson in loving someone unconditionally. We lost “Ita” 9 months after her diagnoses, but during that time I found out why my passion for medicine and helping others has never ceased. The joy I felt when I would help her was incredible and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to help others by becoming a nurse.

As a college student, it’s becoming harder to meet the rising cost of a college education. Not to mention it’s extremely difficult juggling work, school and studying, while trying to live a semi-normal life. I attended Miami Dade College and took this semester off because of family obligations and because I also wanted to start saving money to pay for my education. Although I know you can never save enough for college, I’ve also applied for scholarships and have looked for other resources to ensure I don’t get into debt as I seek to fulfill my lifelong dream.

I will be attending Keiser University in late spring and I’m so excited knowing I’m that much closer to reaching my educational and professional goals. Attending a private school is expensive, but I feel as though it’s where I belong. I’ve often sat back and wondered how someone could know from such a young age what they wanted to be when they grew up. All I know is that my journey has brought me to where I find myself today. My grandmother needed me during her illness and I poured my heart and soul into caring for her because I loved her. I know there are other patients who will benefit from what I am able to offer. Being a nurse isn’t only about giving medicine to a patient, it’s also about making them feel better with a positive attitude and offer them comfort during their time of illness.

My goal is to raise $2000 to buy books, uniforms, and to pay for lab fees and clinical fees. I’m a true believer in giving back and I’m also grateful for any contributions made in helping me reach my goal.

Please support my cause!
